Anaria Se has lived in the Atlantic Ocean all of her life, until the last decade or so. She grew of a numerous, healthy stream, with many siblings and many friends. She enjoyed a peaceful living and looked forward to having a family of her own one day, albeit of course remaining as part of the stream altogether. She had some flings and some heartbreaks and was remarkable perhaps due to her empathy. Though it is far from uncommon for mermaids of the Atlantic Ocean to be calm, reasonable, peaceful creatures, she took it a step further and tried to understand the other point of view rather than just tolerate it.
By the time she was matured, she had ventured to the human world but didn’t care too much for what she found. It was confusing, frightening, and full of judgement. Still, some of her sisters had gone, cousins, friends, so she gave it a try. She became aware of a series of species in existence, and close encounters necessitated the growth of a particularly tough skin (Scale Armor). She managed to survive in some spots by manipulating the emotions of others (Emotional Release) and helping them to see that Anaria presented no threat, but still. She didn’t like to have to pay rent, or have money at all for what she needed. Women were talked down to, worse even than in her Ocean, and there she saw no future for herself, so she retreated to the waters.
Her previous travels, taken while she was roughly twenty-five years of age, had not particularly managed to spark interest in her to begin with. She struggled to find the ability to work a part time job, worse even to keep it or like it. She had assumed credentials of course, provided by the Ocean's ambassadors to land, forged by the best, but it never felt like the real her. The real Anaria Se belonged in deep waters. Neither did she care to find lovers, though she was a bit curious, nor did any real life changing event take place, not at least anything she recognized as significant.
It took a few more decades to prompt her return to land. A Siren from another Ocean had fled into hers, knowing her ocean to be more considerate towards their Sirens. But outsiders were still unwelcome, or at least grudgingly accepted. Not, however, if it meant that they were getting too involved. A coupling with Anaria brought her into her own Sirenhood, and with it the promise of young tadpoles. But the father was exiled to land, with no safety in his own Ocean, and no welcome in hers. Once her children were well established in the Ocean - as the growth of the young tadpoles were often a matter of group care - she was free to go to land to find him.
It was not a glamorous choice, not one made for entertainment. She still disliked working, she disliked the concept of money, she was never rich and it seemed always a bit hungry. It was tempting to return home simply for the comfort of it, but she knew also that life there had its own challenges. Her children were missed, but not in the same way that humans might feel a severed connection - to her, it was natural that her children might be more the property of the Ocean than herself, and were now nearly matured of their own. She was thus free to find her lost mate, hoping for a sort of kinship, some guidance, and perhaps to know where she stood with him and vice versa. Land has some small other curiosities to hold her time of course, nor did she plan for her search to be all consuming, though at least it gave her purpose.
But travels on land were not always how she expected them to be. More bad news came to her ears in the form of her siblings, disappeared, unaccounted for. Trouble with groups of non-humans made her wary and defensive, even at times scared. For a time, every day on land made her want to return to the Ocean, bury her head in the sand and ignore what she felt and what she wanted, what she thought was right. But she found that she couldn’t let go of wrongs committed. And if her Ocean couldn’t respect her, as they had started to show in the last few years, then maybe it wasn’t home after all. Feeling a confusing series of emotions that she was not keen to feel, she has spent the last decade intermittently wandering the coastal cities, searching and learning and looking for something.
