HALF-BAKED CHARACTER APPLICATION
Vyra Emilie Saverne
Looks remarkably like: Giovanna Mezzogiorno
Name: Vyra Emilie Saverne
Power Level: Beginner
Starter Powers: Telepathy. (40 Points) [+2 Power] This power allows the Metahuman to communicate mentally with any human or preternatual creature within twenty feet. Perhaps at higher power within 100 feet or many people at once.
Personality/History: Born and raised in Seattle as an only child, the Savernes were neither poor nor wealthy, but always got off well enough. It wasn't too many years before Vyra started learning she could read minds. Almost as if instinctively, she knew she had to hide it until she could at least control it, not wanting people looking at her like they would any other freak, especially since there were some psychics with a bad rep of being insane and not looked at in any other way but that. Of course, with this she's tried to find only certain crowds that lessen the floods of thoughts, finding only through trial and error that it's hard to pick up on some supernatural's thoughts than one would a regular human. The older, the harder, the better.
But Vyra never always hid or avoided using her abilities as she's gotten to be almost a professional at doing, though. Only eventually coming to realize on her own how much use they could be, especially in a society where most would rather attempt to hide what they think at all.
Starting school with the rest of the kids, as a child, it was ironic how much she began using it more and more to her advantage particularly in the young age it seemed she had it almost all figured out by. The only people who knew that she had this ability were her parents, of course, and they used themselves as guinea pigs on her so she could practice at home in as safe as such an environment as she could get out of such a gift, or curse depending on how one looks at it. While neither of them was telepaths themselves, other members of the family were, and so they made sure she got as much time to spend with them in her years as possible, letting them teach her where her parents couldn't with how limited they were personally. At that point, it was easy to figure out the rest herself, and it didn't take a lot of teaching except maybe a couple of years to control once her powers did reveal themselves to her.
However, having control of her telepathy as a child made it easier to get along with the other kids like any normal child, and after one time where she accidentally slipped up, it was easy. She had accidentally told this one girl in pre-school she'd been friends with that one of the boys in their class liked her. There was only one problem with this innocent as could be hook-up, though. The boy hadn't told anybody. He told on Vyra for this. And when the teacher came to her asking how she could have learned something nobody had told anybody, she decided to go with the one most acceptable answer she could think of at the time that wouldn't land her taking stupid psychology sessions or whatever they did then with kids who appeared more abnormal than others. She told the teacher she'd just been watching them, which the teacher, of course, took to mean that, because Vyra had been watching the two, that something in how he acted with her friend had told her that. Body language. Some were just good at picking up on it than others. What she'd done had listened in on his thoughts and learned from those what he'd thought about her friend. But after this, Vyra stopped telling people things like this and then some. Keeping any and all thoughts, she picked up on to herself; it made things marginally easier than telling people and having them look at her funny if they thought she was saying something that to the rest of the world was some secret. As to what happened with that boy and girl? The girl stopped playing with her, and the boy just to not be near her.
Most of the rest of Vyra's school years continued about as normal as they could be for a telepath. She continued keeping to herself, though she continued to put herself out there and even landed a position in the school paper that she continued even into high school. Sure, it was cliché of her to do, but being able to read minds like she did help to push it along. She eventually also realized that she could tell if people were lying, and not just by 'body language.'
Dating was the only part of high school that she didn't do as much as the rest of the social scene of. Sometimes when Vyra was out with a guy she sometimes accidentally discovered just what they wanted with her. Sometimes it was nothing but sex, but sometimes it was more than that. Sometimes the guys she dated got more hopelessly romantic with her than she thought they could be. Who knew there were guys in high school who wanted to spend the rest of their lives with any one particular date? Once she realized this, she just started avoiding going out with guys and people started wondering if one of them had turned her off and into a lesbian. For people who thoughts so much, a lot of people were still surprisingly stupid.
Vyra graduated high school with her social life a bit less than it had started as, but at least she escaped it with B's and C's, average grades anybody could get if they tried hard enough and then some. Not bad for someone who had to sit through hours of class a day building a wall morning to freedom escaping the average teenage thoughts of those around her, some of course not so average and those she definitely didn't need to feel guilty overhearing. Upon graduation, she spent a couple of years in Europe backpacking, returning to start a Fall semester for a Communications major in UMass Boston upon finding she didn't have it in her for some odd reason to go back to Seattle. Maybe it was because of the scene she knew Boston had over Seattle that she could never go a day not documenting in some way or other. Seattle had certainly been calmer for a similar sort of crowd despite even that. Using her gift, she's even managed to land herself a gig as a journalist for FOX news just in time upon graduation with her bachelor's. Graduating near the top of the class and even having made a couple of friends there too, she doesn't plan to leave anytime soon.
